Meditation: Why I have started, and why you should make the time

‘I don’t have enough time’, ‘I am mindful throughout the day so I don’t need to sit down and formally meditate’, ‘meditation is woo hoo’, ‘meditation isn’t for me’, ‘meditation is for hippies’…. Any of these limiting beliefs resonating with you?

If so I am hearing you!

This was me only a few weeks ago, until I got my hands on Gabby Bernstein’s ‘The Universe Has Your Back’. I got mine from Big W for $14.

I was rushing through life and work, I wasn’t really stopping to sit, feel and listen… listen to me, listen to a higher power, listen to the universe, and know that it has my back. I wasn’t stopping to surrender, to trust.

I was trying to control… EVERYTHING

Since I have started meditating each morning, amazing things are happening in my inner world, I am feeling connected, content… I feel so alive and blissful! This is then showing up in my outside world! Not only does Gabby provide a great insight to universal power, but she also gives some fantastic practical strategies to get you started on your meditation journey.

While meditation comes in many forms (prayer/chanting, ritual/exercise, breathing, viewing art/listening to music), I feel the most powerful for me lately has been the traditional legs crossed, eyes closed, silence kind of stuff!

For beginners, the simplest form of mediation is breathing. Breathing can be done each day for only a couple minutes at a time. The goal of a breathing meditation is to allow the mind to rest from thoughts, which means allowing thoughts to pass through, rather than tending to each one as it enters the mind.

Learning to “be” with the present is the goal of meditation.

There really is no right or wrong way to meditate. In the beginning, you may find it difficult to slow your mind and tap into your inner consciousness and that is ok!

So what are the benefits of meditating?

Tell me WHY I should sit in silence (or chant… something new to me, but something I am LOVING!) for 10 minutes a day, when I don’t have time to scratch my back!?

Well here is why:

In addition to mental health and emotional benefits, meditation can help:

  • Allergies
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Asthma
  • Binge eating
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Chronic pain
  • Sleep problems
  • Substance abuse

For me it provides clarity and space and opens up the feminine soul energy to allow me to receive. Instead of being in the masculine energy of action and accountability, I can move back into my feminine energy of flow and receiving. And particularly for those of us who are businesswomen, we try to control everything, we are too much in the masculine. We are doing it all wrong; to be more successful means to be in line with our feminine soul purpose, to be in the flow, and to trust. To take time!

So from here, if you find yourself stressed, anxious, busy, out of control… Try letting go of that control, sit on your mat and follow the meditations outlined in Gabby’s book.

To get you started here is my favourite from chapter 10:’ You Are The Universe’

Step 1: A prayer for truth

Say this mantra:

‘I call on the energy of the universe to guide my thoughts back to love. I surrender the false perceptions I have placed upon myself. I forgive these thoughts and I know that I am love. I am peace. I am compassion. I am the universe’.

Then, while listening to this AMAZING song;

Step 2: A mediation to connect you to the universe

Sit in the following position for 3 minutes. Hold your hands up 60 degrees. Imagine a flame at your heart center. Lower your hands then breathe in and hold your breathe for 15 seconds. Repeat x 3. Then lay on your back in corpse (Savasana) with your arms facing upwards. Allow your body to relax and let love flow through your body. You may notice tingling and energy in your hands. This. Is. Bliss!

Step 3: Truth is your name

Repeat out aloud: ‘Sat Nam: ‘Truth name’ for about a minute

‘Sat’ = Your connection to universe

‘Nam’ = The grounding vibration that acknowledges that you can bring universal energy in.

4: Walk the path of humility

Know and acknowledge that you are not separate to others, or better, more so, that we are all as one.

No matter where you are on your meditation path, whether this seems a bit ‘woo hoo’, I challenge you, give it a go and let me know you’re thoughts… You will be amazed at the difference you experience in your internal world, that will filter into your outside world.

Love and light xo
