I once heard, nothing has meaning, except the meaning you give it.
And that is exactly what this post is about… Brain function 101. All about how the NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) communication/brain model works.
But first, for our newbies, or a refresh, What is NLP?
NLP is the study of the art and science of personal excellence. It is the decoding of why we and others thank what we think. The why, what and how we communicate within ourselves, our environment and with others, and the why, what and how we own a unique perspective on the world that we have.
Fancy hey, all you need to know is that I’ve done extensive training on helping you get from where you are, to where you want to be, in the areas of your life important to you.
So here we go;
THE COMMUNICATION MODEL:

Firstly we take information in through our five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) and process it at about 2 million bits of information per second! Most of this happening unconsciously. Consciously trying to process all this information isn’t sustainable or practical, our brains would blow up (not really). Therefore, in order to take in relevant information, our nervous system filters it down to about 135 bits of information.
We then delete, distort and generalise information to 7+/- 2 bits of information, according to our own unique individual filters. Once the information passes through our filters a thought is constructed. This ongoing process results in thoughts coming together to create internal representations or our maps of reality. Internal representations are neural pathways, and because we have so many neurons in our brain, we can have so many different maps, and we can also change our maps.
The reality that we experience is largely determined by what we do inside our heads. This means that everyone experiences any given situation differently. It’s our internal representations (our own subjective perceptions) that determine how we view the world and what we experience.
Our thoughts, feelings and behaviours stem from our unique filters. The good news – we have the ability to reprogram the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are no longer serving us (More on this in a moment).
Let’s explore some examples, we can delete, distort and generalise in resourceful or non-resourceful ways.
Distort: Resourceful: plan a trip, change room. Unresourceful: Body image. Eating disorders.
Delete: Resourceful: On the phone or in a room (noisy) and you are only tuned into the speaker or your name when it’s called. Unresourceful: Going to the fridge (or pantry) and asking where’s the sauce when it’s right in front of you.
Generalise: Resourceful: Turn on a light. Unresourceful: Bullied once – everyone hates me.
For example, you might have a memory, and internal representation of going for your goals before, and you generalise, thinking, it’s never worked in the past, which leads to a negative state – your emotions, which changes your physiology, you might become hunched over and closed off. Which then lends itself to your behaviour – Not taking action towards your goals, as why bother, it hasn’t worked in the past.
So HOW do we overcome this: Brain bully to brain champ technique.
We are conditioned to think negative. So when making changes to your thinking patterns and saying I am smart, sexy and confident, may evoke fear and feelings of, I am not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough. Your ‘brain bully’ may not believe you. So if these terms are too far out into the future for your brain to recognise, try the following brain bully exercise:
1. Awareness: The key! Try not to beat yourself up. You are normal. Start with saying to yourself. ‘Ah here he/she is… hi brain bully’. This removes you from the though and the associated emotion
2. Self talk: ‘I notice I am getting better at’. Eg, I notice I am getting better at being sexy, smart and confident, loving my body, choosing love, loving myself etc. While your brain may not believe that right now, it shows your brain that you are working towards this and your brain will then go out and find evidence for this. Divide a piece of paper into two columns. Write down every fear you have in the left hand column. Once you have done this then write down a positive affirmation to counteract this in the right hand column. Eg, I am fat. I am confident, sexy and happy in my body. I love my body just the way it is.
3. See the good: Look in the mirror each day. It doesn’t matter how small you start, just see the good… Turn your negative self talk (your too fat, too ugly) into what you want. Write I AM ENOUGH on your mirror and read/repeat this daily. Go on, try it, who cares what the hubby, partner or kids say. It will actually change their self talk too.
ACTION: Get out your pen and write down your #1 fear, then write down a new, empowering, positive sentence to replace it. Rinse and repeat daily to create a new neural pathway.
