Finding a daily body and hand wash that effectively cleanses without stripping your skin of its natural moisture can be a challenge. Many conventional store-bought options are filled with synthetic fragrances, harsh sulfates, and drying alcohols.
Fortunately, making your own non-toxic, spa-quality foaming wash at home is incredibly easy, cost-effective, and highly customisable.
Today, I'm sharing my absolute favorite all-natural recipe for both hands & body.
Looking for the right supplies? You can grab everything you need from glass foaming pump bottles to base ingredients directly via my Amazon Storefront.
Why Castile Soap?
Liquid Castile soap is a traditional, plant-based soap made from vegetable oils (most commonly olive, coconut, and hemp). It is entirely biodegradable, non-toxic, and incredibly versatile. Because it is highly concentrated, a little goes a long way. When paired with a dedicated foaming pump dispenser, a simple 1:3 ratio of soap to water creates a rich, pillowy lather.
The Aromatic Blend: Grounding & Uplifting
This blend is the perfect morning shower pick-me-up and a refreshing hand wash throughout the day:
Orange & Mandarin: Uplifting, bright, and rich in properties that help naturally tone the skin.
Ylang Ylang: A rich, exotic floral that helps balance skin oils and soothe the mind.
Geranium: Nourishing, gently astringent, and offers a beautiful, soft rose-like undertone.
Lavender: Universally calming, anti-inflammatory, and highly soothing to sensitive or irritated skin.
Peppermint: Adds a crisp, cooling finish that sharpens focus and refreshes the senses.
The DIY Foaming Soap Recipe
Equipment Needed
An 250ml (8.5oz) Foaming Soap Dispenser (Glass is highly recommended when working with pure essential oils)
A small funnel
Ingredients
5 tablespoons: Unscented Liquid Castile Soap.
1 teaspoon: Sweet almond, olive or jojoba Oil (Optional: Adds an extra layer of skin-softening moisture).
Distilled Water: (or pre-boiled, cooled water) to fill the remainder of the bottle.
Essential Oil Scent Profile: (Approx. 40 drops total for a safe, balanced dilution)
14 drops Sweet Orange or Mandarin Essential Oil
10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
8 drops Geranium Essential Oil
5 drops Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
Method
Add the Oils First: Place your funnel into the clean, empty bottle. Drop your essential oils directly into the bottom of the bottle alongside the teaspoon of sweet almond, olive or jojoba oil. Swirl gently to combine them.
Pour in the Castile Soap: Pour the 5tbs of unscented liquid Castile soap over the oil
mixture. Swirl the bottle again so the essential oils begin to bind naturally to the soap base.
Top with Distilled Water: Slowly fill the rest of the bottle with your distilled water.
Crucial Tip: Leave at least an inch of empty headspace at the top of the bottle. If you fill it to the brim, the foaming pump mechanism will displace the liquid and cause it to overflow when screwed back on.
Mix and Use: Secure the foaming pump lid tightly. Give the bottle a gentle shake or roll it between your hands to completely integrate the water and soap. It's ready to use!
Pro-Tips for the Perfect Batch
Why Distilled Water Matters: Because this recipe is 100% natural and contains no synthetic preservatives, using distilled or filtered, boiled water prevents the introduction of bacteria, extending the shelf-life of your batch for several weeks.
If the Pump Sticks: If your foaming pump ever starts to feel sticky, it's usually due to a minor buildup of soap or carrier oil in the mechanism. Simply remove the pump, place the tube in warm water, and pump it several times until it flushes clean.
